Hawa’s American Dream

Invest to Help Entrepreneurs Achieve Their Dreams

Dear Friend,

Hawa has loved cooking since she was a child and dreamed of opening a business to share her food with others. But her dream was disrupted when she had to flee Somalia for a refugee camp in Kenya. There, she survived because of the food aid provided by the United States.

After arriving in America she wanted to repay her adopted country. “Back home, those opportunities are rare. Here people are ready to help, in America everything is possible. If you work hard, you can pursue what you like.” Hawa supported herself working in childcare, and started her own business, but without training had to close it after a couple years.

Still, her former customers wanted her famous hot sauce. “I had the idea, but I didn’t know where to start.” This summer, Hawa took our introductory eight-week business course, and later advanced courses on packaged foods and marketing. Through Ventures, Hawa has access to a commercial kitchen and insurance for her new brand, Safi Hot Sauce. Now she’s working with us to determine licensing, packaging, and pricing to get her product into our store in Pike Place Market for the holidays. When asked about her plans, Hawa said “Ventures can help me every step.”

Has someone helped you achieve your dreams? Hawa dreams of using her business to give back to the people who have helped her. We are asking you to follow her example and contribute to Ventures as an expression of gratitude for the help you have received in achieving your dreams. Hawa is on the brink of success.
